Son père s’appelle Vittal Mallya. Sa mère s’appelle Lalitha Ramaiah Mallya. La première femme de Vijay Mallya s’appelle Sameera Mallya. Avec elle, il a un garçon, Sidhartha Mallya. Sa deuxième épouse s’appelle Rekha Mallya. Avec elle, il a deux filles : Leanna Mallya et Tanya Mallya. Après avoir épousé Rekha Mallya, il a adopté une fille, Laila Mallya.

Il est titulaire d’un Bachelor of Commerce avec mention (B.Com. Hons.). Il a également reçu le titre de Docteur en philosophie en administration des affaires (Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration, Honoris Causa), décerné par la Southern California University, à Irvine, aux États-Unis. Il a fait ses études à La Martinière de Calcutta, puis au St. Xavier’s College, également à Calcutta.
Fonction occupée / Fortune
Vijay Mallya a occupé des postes clés en tant que PDG du groupe United Breweries (UB Group), président d'United Spirits, et a fondé Kingfisher Airlines. Il a aussi été membre du Parlement indien (Rajya Sabha) et propriétaire de l'écurie de Formule 1 Force India.
Selon Forbes, sa richesse était estimée à 750 millions de dollars américains en 2013.
Distinctions
Vijay Mallya a reçu le Lifetime Achievement Award de la Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) pour sa contribution au sport automobile en Inde.
En 2013, il a été désigné International Business Leader of the Year par les GG2 Leadership & Diversity Awards au Royaume-Uni.
Il a également été nommé Entrepreneur of the Year lors des Asian Awards, en reconnaissance de son rôle dans le développement des entreprises internationales du UB Group.
En 2007, il a été désigné “Impact Person of the Year” dans le secteur des médias et de la publicité pour son influence dans le monde des affaires.
Vijay Mallya s’est vu décerner un doctorat honorifique de la Southern California University for Professional Studies. Il a aussi été distingué en tant qu’Officier de la Légion d'Honneur de France.
